PATNA, SEPTEMBER 17: A month after a Dalit was raped and murdered, allegedly by relatives of an RJD legislator in the constituency of Chief Minister Rabri Devi, the police is yet to make headway in the probe. The 18-year-old was murdered on August 26 after she ignored threats and filed a police complaint, 10 days after she was raped.

The victim’s brother, Rajkumar Das, said accused Uday Rai and Nanhaki Rai had threatened to kill her if she did not withdraw the rape case. ‘‘They are still threatening us,’’ he said. The Chamar community, to which the victim belonged, has also been threatened.

According to the Vaishali police, Uday and Nanhaki, both relatives of MLC Uday Narain Rai of the RJD, are absconding. Villagers of Raghopur Diera, however, said they were roaming around freely and were not being arrested because of the political clout they wield.

Uday Narain Rai had vacated the Raghopur Assembly seat for Rabri Devi and consequently, was nominated to the upper house of the legislature. Rai said the accused were his relatives but he was not shielding them. ‘‘I have not seen them in the past six months,’’ he said.

‘‘The police have got orders to attach the properties of the accused,’’ Vaishali DM H.R. Srinivasa said.

The 18-year-old, who worked for Yadav landowners, was allegedly raped on August 16. The accused threatened her and members of her community against reporting the matter to the police but later, she went all the way to the DSP to lodge her complaint. This infuriated the accused who now threatened her to take back the case. She refused but stopped going to work as her mother feared for her life.

Ten days after the incident, the accused killed her when they found her alone on the morning of August 26. Family members said even after her death, they continued to receive threats to withdraw the case.

இந்த தலித்களை கொல்லும் RJD கும்பலை ஆதரிப்பவர்கள் யார்?

இதோ 'தி இண்டு' (Thursday, Feb 10, 2005) தரும் செய்தி

Leaders of two most important social Muslim organisations in North India have come out decidedly in favour of the RJD after the first round of polling, though these two groups do not see eye to eye on many social and religious issues. These leaders belong to the Deoband Darul Uloom and the Barelvi sect. Tauqir Raza Khan, a prominent Barelvi sect leader is virtually camping in Bihar. He is expected to address as many as 22 gatherings in support of the RJD before the campaign concludes on February 21. (Battle for Bihar Muslim vote rises to a new high, The Hindu 10-2-2005)
